Museum installation - UTwente x GameLab Oost x Cosmos Lattrop - 2020 - 2021
For my bachelor's thesis at the University of Twente, I worked with GameLab Oost and Cosmos Observatory Lattrop to create serious gaming installations to teach visitors about the Sun. This resulted in three physical designs that can be visited to this day. As the one in charge of the physical designs, I used research on physicalisation and embodiment to create immersive hardware. Together with the game designers I discussed what experiences could be fitted together as we continuously co-designed with the museum itself. At the end the prototypes were tested and realised when feedback was implemented.
VR experience - University of Twente - 2020
During the second year of my bachelor's, I led a team of 10 people through the development of a VR application that was made to teach people about how COVID-19 affected people around the world. We designed a VR application that uses statistical graphs as a rollercoaster to teach people in a fun and immersive way. The graphs were carefully chosen from distinct countries and then each country gained their own rollercoaster with culturally inspired vistas. As a project leader and developer, I worked on managing tasks, productivity through corona times and developing small aspects of the game.
Videogame - University of Twente - 2019
As I specialized in game technology, I made my first attempt at a 3D platformer. This came with newly needed skills in design, 3D modeling, animating, audio engineering and coding. The resulting game is BuzzBeat. You are a small bee traveling through a mysterious hive. The music guides you through the neon-inspired levels as you collect flowers.
Hardware device - University of Twente x Paul Trossèl - 2019
Together with a team of 5 other people I designed and developed a custom device that can be used for Paul Trossel, who has locked-in syndrome (similar to Stephen Hawking). The device could only be operated through the use of his eyes and one finger, which he still had control over. We had to see how we could accommodate as much expression as possible that could be expressed in only a couple of seconds. The device can be seen in use in the accompanying TED talk.
Videogame installation - University of Twente x Gogbot - 2018
This was one of the first bigger projects that I led at the university. Together with a group of 8 people, we created an interactive arcade machine that would teach visitors of the technology festival Gogbot about gene modification in animals in a playful way. Designing such an experience required careful balance between playful and provocative elements to make the user think and create a memorable experience in a short time.
As the team leader I had to divide tasks along design, construction, programming report writing and art. The installation was well received and was reused at future events at the university as a show model for the study. The game itself was later released by one of the developers on itch.io. You can find the game here.
